Faculty 2: Arts and Humanities offers a permanet
at the Department for English and American Studies, section
Fremdsprachliche Bildung in der Grundschule (FBG) – Englisch,
which is to be filled as soon as possible.
In the research profile “Culture and its Mediation”, Faculty 3 fo-
cuses on communication processes, their forms, potentials and
limits in politics, society and culture. The faculty cooperates
with the other profile areas of the University of Koblenz and
with regional and municipal institutions.
The Department of English and American Studies consists of
two independent sections: Anglistik und Amerikanistik and
Fremdsprachliche Bildung in der Grundschule (FBG). The sec-
tion of English and American Studies focuses on the complex
transformations of Anglophone cultures in a global world. Priv-
ileged areas of research are literature and (visual) culture from
the 18th to the 21st century, Material Studies, Cultural Studies,
Postcolonial Studies, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics,
Language Practice, and Foreign Language Teaching, especially
Content Language Integrated Learning and Task-Based Lan-
guage Teaching, Fremdsprachliche Bildung in der Grundschule
(FBG) – Englisch focusses on the research, development and ap-
plication of cutting-edge methods of teaching and learning Eng-
lish in primary school.
The newly created professorship advertised here is intended to
raise the profile of the department and particularly of the sec-
tion Fremdsprachliche Bildung in der Grundschule (FBG) -
Englisch, which is involved in the Bachelor of Education degree
program (Primary Teaching) and above all, is responsible for
the Master of Education degree program (Primary Teaching).
Key responsibilities:
The position holder will be responsible for representing the
subject Teaching English in Primary School in research and
teaching.
He/She should have an outstanding track record in teaching
English at primary school research.
Research is expected to focus on, but not limited to, early for-
eign language acquisition, intersecting with Integrierte
Fremdsprachenarbeit (IFA), which is mandatory in primary
school in Rhineland-Palatinate. A research profile related to this
particular model of English foreign language teaching in pri-
mary school is preferred. Research expertise in the use of digi-
tal media in the classroom will be a plus.
In addition, active engagement in the acquisition of third-party
funding will be expected.
The position holder’s responsibilities will include actively re-
cruiting and developing young scientists.
The teaching load is currently nine hours per week per semes-
ter.
Teaching is to be provided primarily in the teaching methodol-
ogy courses of the teacher training degree programs offered
and to a lesser extent in subject-specific courses that are espe-
cially relevant to teacher training.
Administering with examinations in all degree programs involv-
ing English in primary school is also required.
The willingness to cooperate across and within disciplines and
in general is a prerequisite, particularly in the context of the
Center of Teacher Education and the Institute for Primary
School Teaching.
It is also expected that the position holder will take on respon-
sibilities in academic self-government.
The position holder will be expected to play a significant role in
shaping the department through his/her own ideas and em-
phases on actively generate initiatives that contribute to devel-
oping the profile and teacher training.
Recruitment requirements:
The recruitment requirements of section 54 of the Higher Edu-
cation Act (HochSchG) of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate ap-
ply. The statue requires a higher-education degree, a qualified
University Professorship
(W2 LBesG, conferring with civil-service status)
doctorate in English or American Studies (with a focus in Teach-
ing Methodology, Literature, Culture or Linguistics), pedagogi-
cal aptitude and additional scientific achievements.
Only candidated with at least three years teaching experiece at
school are to be appointed to a position whose job description
includes tasks in educational science or subject-specific teach-
ing methodolgy.
Experience in acquiring and managing externally funded pro-
jects is expected to be documented with an overview of past
third-party funding activities. A research concept must also be
presented.
Both German and English language skills are required at native
- speaker level; courses are offered exclusively in English.
Special pedagogical skills and teaching experience are required
and must be demonstrated by presenting a teaching concept.
The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the University of Koblenz
advocate a concept of intensive student mentoring and there-
fore expect a high face-to-face presence at the university.
